An experience with the Sika deer of Nara

The city known as Nara is a magical place located in Nara Prefecture. Located in the Kansai region of Japan and around an hour away from Kyoto, a day-trip to Nara should definitely be considered. Like any other city in Japan, Nara has some really beautiful temples and shrines, making it a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Since Kyoto and Nara are loaded with places of interest I guarantee that most of your time will be spent sightseeing temple grounds. I like finding a balance wherever I travel to and I believe Nara offers just that – the opportunity to interact with wild Sika deer that roam the streets, the temple grounds and the parks!

You will probably be arriving to Nara by train. You will need to head towards the Buddhist temple grounds known as Tōdai-ji, which takes approximately 30 – 45 minutes, depending on your walking pace. You’re looking at around 2.6 km.

Along the way you will see numerous Sika deer grazing on the park’s grass or crossing busy roads. You will also encounter people selling biscuits to give to the deer and yes, you can obviously interact with them and feed them too. I totally loved the place and I’m sure that you will also like the experience. A day trip here is definitely worth it!
